January 30th, 2009
St. Catherine's, Ontario

Brock University, St. Catherine’s, January 17th; the Pakmen 18U girls retained their status as a top Ontario team winning the bronze medal at the OVA McGregor Cup Premier Division. The team went 3-2 winning their pool and the bronze medal. “We played great in 3 matches good in another and I won’t comment on the other” says Coach Bob Cholette.

The first match of the day saw the Pakmen girls up against Durham attack 17U who last year finished 5th at the 16U Ontario Championship. “The girls played simply perfect. We had not played a better match up to that point this year” states Cholette. The first game went quick as perhaps the younger Durham team was still trying to get their feet under them with the Pakmen girls winning 25-10. The second was pretty much the same with Pakmen winning 25-15. “It was one of those matches where everything went right. Our passing, serving, defense and offense were right on the money. They’re a good young team we just played perfect” comments Cholette.

In their second match the Pakmen girls would face the South County Bandits. In contrast to the first match the Pakmen girls seemed uninterested in the proceedings. “We were simple not focused on the match at all. We pretty much did nothing well. But credit should also go to South County for playing the best I have seen from them yet” says Cholette.  South County won the match 2-1 and went on to finish 3rd in the pool.

Despite this loss the Pakmen girls finished first in their pool and would face the winner of DRVC and the National Capitals last year’s Ontario’s 4th place finisher. It was an emotional 3 set match with DRVC winning. The combination of DRVC’s tough win and the Pakmen girls anger over losing to South County was a wake up call returning the Pakmen girls to their previous form winning 2-0 “This match was typical of our play this year, we did what we practiced.” Says Cholette.

In the semi-finals the Pakmen girls would face a familiar foe the Aurora Storm Typhoon. The two teams had faced off in a tournament earlier this year with the Pakmen girls winning. This time things would go the other way with the Typhoon winning 2-0. “We played reasonably well not great. I thought the Typhoon were just in sync today and things were going their way” says Cholette. These comments proved true as the Storm met an undefeated Durham attack team in the finals winning the first set but eventually falling 2-1 to earn silver.

The Bronze medal match would see the Pakmen girls face another familiar foe the Predators. The Pakmen girls had also faced the Predators earlier this year winning 2-1. “We seem destined to play some teams all the time and others almost never” jokes Cholette. He continues “we played another great match, everyone put in a great effort and we were a team, it was fun to watch.” The Pakmen girls won the Bronze medal 2-0.

“Overall the day was a success although we would like to be in the finals. Our other coach, Stefanie and I did not waiver in our commitment to trying to do new and more aggressive things. We are working towards the future and the Ontario Championships.” says coach Cholette. The Pakmen girls have competed in three tournaments this season finishing, 3rd, 2nd and 3rd. They will next compete February 7th in the OVA 18U Bugarski Cup Premier Division.
